DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES
December 8, 2020
Dear Colleague,
I am writing to tell you about an important new COVID-19 natural history study being conducted by the National Institutes of Health at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. For this study, we are seeking symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, ages 18-80, diagnosed with COVID-19 acutely (within 4 weeks of the onset of their symptoms) or during their recovery (after 4 to 12 weeks) if they have recovered at home or received care at a regional facility.
The objectives of this clinical research protocol are to link inflammatory responses present in blood, bronchoalveolar lavage, spinal fluid, and urine with imaging of COVID-19 target organs (lungs, heart, brain, kidneys) during the stages of COVID-19 infection, including:
- early stages of infection (day 1-28, +/- 7 days);
- recovery (after 4 to 12 weeks); and
- convalescence (12 weeks to 12 months).
Eligible patients with COVID-19 associated-symptoms but not needing hospitalization will be enrolled within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test result with imaging and other tests done at the Clinical Center. Acutely ill patients requiring hospitalization will be admitted to the NIH Clinical Center COVID-19 Care Unit and provided standard of care therapy, as well as offered the opportunity to participate in ongoing clinical trials of anti-COVID-19 therapies. Patients who have recovered from the acute infection, including those referred from regional hospitals and health centers, will be enrolled at the Clinical Center approximately 4 – 12 weeks after recovery from their acute illness.
Compensation will be provided to study participants and all care provided will be at no cost to participants. For more information, please go to https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04401449.
We sincerely hope you will consider sharing the enclosed information in your clinic and with your patients. Interested patients should contact the NIH Office of Patient Recruitment at (866) 444-1132, and reference study number 20-CC-0113. If you have any questions about the study, please feel free to call or email me directly.
Sincerely,
Anthony F. Suffredini, M.D.

 |
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) seek COVID-19 positive patients in the Washington, D.C. area to understand how coronavirus affects the function of the body’s immune system in controlling the infection and how different organs of the body (such as the lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys) respond to the infection from its early appearance to recovery, and whether there are any long-term effects of the infection on the organs of the body.
|
You can participate if you:
- Are 18 to 80 years old
- Have an active infection of COVID-19, with
or without symptoms, diagnosed within 28
days of documented COVID-19 infection
- Live within 50 mile radius of Bethesda, MD
